what is orientation?

Defin
ition

Orientation is the brain’s ability to determine our position in relation to other objects in the environment. To do this, we use prominent points in the environment but also sensory information such as vision, hearing or the sense of balance.

Good orientation skills enable us to move safely in traffic with a large number of other road users, to use free spaces in the square and to find our way around the environment even without a navigation system.

As life progresses, the ability to orientate decreases. From around the age of 50, there is initially a reduction in spatial perception and navigation ability, while in older age, directional perception and spatial memory also decline. The lack of use of orientation skills through navigation devices accelerates this process and can lead to disorientation, uncertainty and thus a reduction in quality of life and an increase in the risk of accidents.

Special training in orientation skills together with physical activity can sustainably improve navigation skills. The SKILLCOURT will help you with this.

Orientation
can be trained

on the SKILLCOURT

To improve orientation skills, the SKILLCOURT combines navigation tasks with physical activity. Players must find their way around the SKILLCOURT and, based on the information on the screen, select and run to the correct field. This stimulates navigation ability to increase neuronal plasticity.

Physical activity also releases growth hormones, which support adaptations in the brain such as the formation of new synapses and reduce the loss of nerve cells. These growth hormones have a particularly strong effect on the hippocampus, a brain region that plays a crucial role in both memory and orientation. Therefore, many orientation training courses also contain a memory component. By using synergistic effects of orientation, memory and physical activity, the SKILLCOURT optimizes training success and transfer into everyday life.

Qs

What is meant by orientation ability and how does it influence life?

Orientation describes the ability to determine one’s own position in the environment. Important factors in orientation ability are navigation, spatial perception and direction perception. In everyday life, we need a good sense of direction in order to navigate traffic, find the fastest route and arrive safely at our destination. In sports, good orientation helps us to recognize open spaces, while at work, pilots, frequent drivers, engineers or architects, for example, benefit from good orientation.

What advantages does orientation training with SKILLCOURT offer for everyday life?

Technical developments such as navigation systems cause a progressive loss of the ability to orientate ourselves. Training on the SKILLCOURT can counteract this development and helps improve orientation. This allows us to quickly and safely determine the path to the goal, even in complex situations.

What role do sensory skills such as balance and hearing play in orientation training?

The vestibular system and balance provide information about the position in space as well as movements, accelerations and speed. All of these parameters are relevant for perceiving one’s own position in the environment and anticipating changes.

The acoustic system allows sounds to be localised. In road traffic, for example, we can estimate the distance and speed of cars. Together with the visual and vestibular systems, this results in a comprehensive assessment of the environment. This is also known as multisensory technology.

Which SKILLCOURT exercises help to sustainably improve orientation?

In order to improve your orientation skills, you will find a variety of exercises in the “Orientation” category that require effective navigation on the SKILLCOURT. The trainings include:
