What is
orient
ation?
Orientation is the brain’s ability to determine our position in relation to other objects in the environment. To do this, we use distinctive points in the environment but also sensory information such as vision, hearing or the sense of balance.
Good orientation skills enable us to move safely in traffic with a variety of other road users, to use open spaces in the square, and to find our way in the environment even without a navigation system.

Changes throughout life
Why are
we disor
iented?
Throughout life, the ability to orientate decreases. From the age of about 50, spatial perception and navigation skills are reduced, while directional perception and spatial memory also decline at a later age. The lack of use of orientation skills through navigation devices accelerates this process and can lead to disorientation, uncertainty and thus to a reduction in the quality of life and an increase in the risk of accidents.
Specific training of orientation skills together with physical activity can improve navigation skills in the long term. The SKILLCOURT helps you to do this.

With SKILLCOURT Training
To improve orientation skills, SKILLCOURT combines navigation tasks with physical activity. The players have to find their way around the SKILLCOURT and, based on the information on the screen, select and approach the correct field. This stimulates navigational ability to increase neural plasticity.
Physical activity also releases growth hormones that support brain adaptations such as the formation of new synapses and reduce neuronal cell loss. These growth hormones have a particularly strong effect on the hippocampus, a brain region that plays a crucial role in both memory and orientation. Therefore, many orientation trainings additionally contain a memory component. By using synergistic effects of orientation, memory and physical activity, the SKILLCOURT optimizes the training success as well as the transfer into everyday life.

Orientation describes the ability to determine one’s own position in the environment. Important factors of orientation ability are navigation, spatial perception and directional perception. In everyday life, we need a good sense of direction to navigate traffic, find the fastest route and arrive safely at our destination. In sports, good orientation helps us to recognize free spaces, while at work, for example, pilots, frequent drivers, engineers or architects benefit from good orientation.
Technical developments such as navigation systems are causing a progressive loss of the ability to orient oneself. Training on SKILLCOURT can counteract this development and supports the improvement of orientation. This enables us to quickly and reliably determine the path to the goal, even in complex situations.
The vestibular system as well as the balance provide information about the position in space as well as movements, accelerations and velocities. All these parameters are relevant for perceiving one’s own position in the environment and anticipating changes.
The acoustic system enables the localization of sounds. In road traffic, for example, we can use it to estimate the distance and speed of cars. Together with the visual and vestibular system, this results in a comprehensive assessment of the environment. This is also referred to as multisensory technology.
To improve your orientation skills, you will find in the category “Orientation” a variety of exercises that require effective navigation on the SKILLCOURT. Trainings include:
